Montalcino, pearl of the Val d'Orcia

Located in the south of Siena, a few kilometers far from Pienza, this enchanting village is immersed in the splendid landscape of the Val d'Orcia Natural Park which has recently been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Characterized by a continuous succession of sinuous hills dotted with fields of yellow flowers and turquoise lakes, the medieval town reigns over the valley with its medieval walls embracing the enchanting Abbey of Sant'Antimo.

Brunello di Montalcino history

The international popularity of this village, which has remained almost intact since the 16th century, is linked to the wine that is produced here. Brunello di Montalcino is in fact one of the best known and appreciated Italian wine in the world. History says us that this area, already in the fifteenth century, was renowned for its red wines. The geographical position of Montalcino in fact allows an ideal sun exposure to ripen the grapes and obtain a product particularly suitable for long periods of aging.

For the “invention" of the precious formula of Brunello wine we must wait for 1888 and the idea of Ferruccio Biondi Santi, who first eliminated vines of the traditional Chianti recipe, such as Canaiolo and Colorino, to use instead the only variety of Sangiovese.

Brunello di Montalcino characteristics

In the production of a Brunello, in fact, no other type of grape is allowed. From 1998 it's mandatory to age Brunello for at least two years in oak barrels and kept at least 4 months in bottle before it can be placed on the market.

Brunello di Montalcino is brilliant with a lively garnet color. It has an intense, persistent, ample and ethereal aroma. We can smell hints of undergrowth, aromatic wood, small fruits, light vanilla and composite jam. On the palate it has an elegant and harmonious body, it is dry with long aromatic persistence.

Due to its characteristics, Brunello di Montalcino can be long aged, improving over time for a period that varies according to the vintage. It ranges from a minimum of ten years to a maximum of thirty, with exceptions. It should be kept in a cool, dark cellar, without noise and odors. Before Brunello is ready to drink, it must be aged for a minimum of 5 years, 2 of which in oak barrels.
