Tasting the fine wines of Montefalco: a unique experience at the Còlpetrone Estate

  • 19/07/2024

History, tradition, passion: these are the three ingredients of Umbrian wines. Italy's “green heart" is famous not only for its breathtaking landscapes, lush nature, and ancient medieval cities, but also and especially for its winemaking tradition and the excellent products that result from it. Each wine thus has its own history that is deeply intertwined with the territory, and this is well understood by the Còlpetrone winery of Tenute del Cerro in Montefalco: it is here that some of the most prestigious labels in the entire region are born.

Together with Marco Castignani, Europe Sales and Marketing Representative of the Tenute del Cerro Group, we explore this production reality. And above all, let's find out together why a tasting of Umbrian wines is an experience not to be missed.

Why experience a wine tasting in Umbria

There are regions, like Umbria, that still have so much to reveal, because they are not yet fully known and perhaps, for this reason, more authentic. Starting with its excellent wines, which have nothing to envy from the most renowned labels in Italy and internationally, and which here are the truest expression of the territory. Tasting them means entering into intimate contact with a past filled with a love for wine, the solidity of traditions, and the strength of innovations in the constant pursuit of quality and excellence

As Castignani explains, "for us, the experience of visiting and tasting is one of the most important aspects, especially at Còlpetrone, where the uniqueness lies precisely in a wine that has yet to be fully known and appreciated". A tasting of local wines, therefore, allows one to discover the most genuine and traditional flavors that the region has to offer, accompanied by enchanting landscapes and a millennial history. More than other regions, Umbria offers a perfect blend of nature, art, and good wine, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for anyone who decides to embark on this sensory journey.

The importance of Sagrantino for the region

The jewel of Còlpetrone is indeed the Sagrantino. It is the quintessential indigenous grape variety of Umbria, particularly in the area of Montefalco, and one of the oldest in Italy. Particularly striking during autumn, when the leaves blaze and take on a precious purple color, it represents the pulsating heart of the Estate's winemaking. "Sagrantino is the prince of the territory", says Castignani. "It's a wine that represents a uniqueness: there is no other with these characteristics in the entire Italian and global wine landscape". Its history and uniqueness make Sagrantino not only a symbol of Umbrian viticulture but also a reference point for all wine enthusiasts. Its complexity and depth require careful and mindful tasting to fully appreciate all its nuances.

Wine tasting in Umbria: what to know about the experience at Tenuta di Còlpetrone

Còlpetrone Winery offers curious visitors and wine lovers the opportunity to taste the fruits of this highly prized grape through a variety of complete and engaging experiences. Founded in 1995 with the construction of the current cellar, it has quickly established itself as one of the leading producers in the Montefalco DOCG area. The visit begins with a tour of the vineyards, where visitors can admire the beauty of the Umbrian landscape and gain a better understanding of the terroir that gives unique characteristics to the wines produced.

Afterwards, the visit continues with a tour of the winery and the barrel room, where the wines rest and mature. Castignani emphasizes the importance of these moments, which allow for telling the story and peculiarities of the wines: "The narrative of the territory, its production, and being part of the historical fabric of its appellation is a must. All our experiences categorically start with the storytelling of the territory".

It's the starting point for an activity that combines knowledge with conviviality. The actual tasting takes place in the modern wine shop of the Estate, a welcoming and convivial environment equipped with a central circular counter around which groups can sit together with the winemaker. During the tasting, which is available by reservation only, participants can savor four distinctive wines from Còlpetrone:

  1. Rosso di Montefalco DOC, an elegant and harmonious blend, perfect for those seeking a versatile red wine that expresses the character of Sagrantino in a softer and more approachable version

  2. Grechetto, a fresh and aromatic white wine made from native Umbrian grapes. It surprises with its liveliness and complexity, ideal for pairing with seafood dishes and appetizers.

  3. "Memoira" Sagrantino Montefalco DOCG, the historic label of Sagrantino, representing the essence of the Montefalco territory. It is the iconic wine of the estate, renowned for its robust structure and intense tannins, and has undergone a new identity journey with a new labeling that has enriched the bottle with golden tones.

  4. "Sacer" Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, the selection of Sagrantino, characterized by an impenetrable red color, intense and powerful aromas with hints of ripe red fruits and leather, and evident tannic concentration.

Guests will have the opportunity to discover the sensory characteristics of the wines, from color to aromatic notes, and of course, flavors. But that's not all: they will also experience various pairings, as each tasting is accompanied by samples of local specialties and extra virgin olive oil, a flagship product of the Montecorona Estate.

Castignani emphasizes that "all visits to the estate, the aging cellar, and the barrel room can be conducted free of charge, upon reservation". This makes the experience accessible and flexible for all wine enthusiasts.

Lastly, Còlpetrone Estate offers a variety of tasting packages, each of which can be customized based on visitors' preferences. "Our tasting experience doesn't just focus on Sagrantino, but provides a comprehensive view of the estate's production", explains Castignani. "We want to allow our guests to fully understand the depth and historical context of all the wine types we produce in Montefalco."

Participating in a wine tasting at Tenuta di Còlpetrone means not only savoring wines of excellent quality but also embarking on a journey through the history and culture of one of Italy's most fascinating wine regions. Thanks to the passion and expertise of the Còlpetrone team, every visitor can enjoy an unforgettable experience, discovering the wonders of Umbrian winemaking in an authentic and welcoming setting.
